Taiko Night

  by Hamish Robertson

I woke up this morning with Don Doko on my mind
And clattering round behind it there’s a Don I have to find
A storming Taiko solo with a thunderous crashing beat
Chasing through my brain cells with a rhythm to complete
Before my eyes are open it’s flowing fast and long
A pattern’s now emerging with a soft melodic song
Fingers tapping the Jiuchi lips mouth the solo’s flow
There’s a taiko group inside me which beats from head to toe
And now a tricky passage where the beat steps up apace
Hold the rhythm hold the rhythm let the solo take its space

And now the lights are up - its front of stage at last
Some words of wisdom for us - please don’t go too fast
In complete and utter silence T strikes a single beat
And standing in position with easy balanced feet
We’re off and moving briskly and the tension starts to fade
The weeks and weeks of practice a wondrous sound have made
Spinning poised and nimble our bachi flow with grace
A rocking rollercoaster of joyful cheerful pace
Into the crescendo starting soft and low
Bachi rising higher to get that noise to grow
It’s a blurring mass of power flowing from within
But synchronised just perfectly to make that massive din

With a Do Don HA to finish we stop in perfect pose
To an ear-stunning silence coursing head to toes
Now the cheers and claps and shouts from an ecstatic crowd
A fantastic feeling standing with the rafters ringing loud
Walk off with pride and dignity and a quiet smile of pride
A fabulous sensation from adrenalin inside
It’s over but not finished there’ll be another day-o
And Taiko Night will rise again - thank you Mugenkyo!
