Every winter the Mugen Taiko Dojo run a teaching and performance project called PROJECT TAIKO for 18 – 26 year olds.

The goal of the project is to introduce the art form of taiko drumming to a new group of young people, most of whom have never played taiko before, and also to start the process by which the few most talented players can apply to enter the Taiko Academy.

It is not a prerequisite to have taiko or drumming experience, although it is an advantage to have some musical, dance or martial arts background or involvement in arts activity.

Following an audition process, successful applicants train weekly at the Dojo for a period of four months. At the end of the project, the participants perform the pieces they have learned as part of the Dojo Showcase Concerts held in Central Scotland.

Thanks to funding from Japanese foundations, participation in the project is free of charge. So far the programme has been generously supported by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, and the Nippon Taiko Federation.

The current Project Taiko is running from November 2006– March 2007, culminating in the Big Bang – Dojo showcase concerts in March 2007.

The next auditions will take place in November 2007, and the next Project Taiko will run from December 2007– March 2008.
