Taiko Academy is the regular training programme at the Dojo, the purpose of which is to train and develop professional-level players. Taiko Academy members are the main performers at the annual Dojo Showcase Concerts in Central Scotland. The more experienced Taiko Academy members also perform with the Dojo Drummers, the performing group based at the Dojo.

Lucy Searle

Started training at the Dojo in October 2003. Lucy plays the trumpet and piano, and has a background in gymnastics and choral singing, as a soprano with the National Youth Choir of Scotland, and RSNO Junior Chorus for 5 years. The wildest hair in taiko academy.

Shonagh Walker

Started playing Taiko with her schools taiko group "Yakamashii Taiko" since age 17. Started training at the Dojo in October 2003. Currently a student at Strathclyde University studying biomolecular and medicinal chemistry.

Peter Tagg

Started training at the Dojo in May 2004. Peter is a professional percussionist and teacher, in particular teaching Samba in schools and community centres. Also performs Djembe and Congas with club DJs and has his own Samba fusion group in Glasgow. Background in Jeet Kune Do, a form of Kung Fu.

Started training at the Dojo in May 2004. Danced highland dancing as a child, as well as playing piano. A freelance journalist and writer by profession. Nicknamed “Combat Kate”.

Jen McFadden

Started training at the Dojo in May 2004. Learned piano as a child, and has a strong interest in film soundtracks and musicals. First played taiko at a weekend workshop at the Dojo.

Neil McDougall

Started training at the Dojo in December 2004. An ex-boxer. Performs lead roles in musicals, most recently in Les Miserables. A proficient Djembe player, Neil wow-ed everyone at the audition by playing a rendition of Mugenkyo's "Ikkyo" on the Djembe - all the parts at once. Currently studying music composition at university in Edinburgh.
